At Harris House Fine Art, picture framing is not a sideline. Krista May apprenticed as a picture framer in Winnipeg and opened her first business in Selkirk in the mid 1980s. She taught courses in framing in Manitoba before moving to British Columbia in 1988.

Krista co-owned, with partner Frankie (aka Mom), A Thousand Words Picture Framing — an award winning frame shop on Canada’s west coast— for over twenty years. Frankie competently ran the business end giving Krista the freedom to concentrate on design. It was a lot of fun working together, but Frankie, at nearly seventy, decided it was time to relax.

In 2009, Krista opened the doors to a new venture in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. There is not much Krista doesn’t have experience with as a framer, and she has a particular fondness for framing heirloom pieces—old lace, jewellery, medals, photos and often a combination of treasures. All work is done carefully by hand. She prefers to glue and nail the frame corners in the time honoured tradition and has no need for a computerised mat cutter. The materials she uses exclusively, however, are state-of-the-art archival.

Have peace of mind knowing your treasures will be protected and because they’ll look as good in fifty years as they do now, your kids and grandkids will cherish them rather than stick them in a garage sale!
